How to build a Compost Bin

Have you seen the trend yet on the blog, I am in full Spring mode and have really been out working in the yard a lot.  Last week I decided that I wanted to try and make a compost bin this year so that we have some great dirt next year and so that we can do something with all the left over veggies and coffee grounds we use.  My husband as started calling me a hippie with my composting, veggie planting, and recycling crafts.  I take it as a complement and will keep on with my hippie ways!

This project is actually so easy you can do it in just minuets, but that is no fun!  And I did not want a big ugly trash can sitting in my yard so I decided that before we started composting we needed to paint our trash can and make it pretty.

While we were painting my daughter told me "This was the best idea ever Mommy!"  Man I love that kid!!

So this is how to make your own compost bin.

Supplies

Trash can with secure lid
Drill
Paint (you can omit but what is the fun in that?)

Directions

Start by painting your trash can, we choose a nice Spring seen with flowers.

After the paint is dry drill about 10 holes in your bin.  I also put holes on the bottom for drainage but you don't have to.  

Find a good shaded place for your bin.  It can get some sun but you don't want it to get too much, it will dry out your compost.

It is also a good idea to stir up your compost every few days, you can do this by rolling your bin around or using a big stick to stir it up inside the bin.
