Tin Can Planter

Like I said back in my toilet paper roll planter post, my daughter wants to start her own garden.  Even though she wants to help with the veggies, she really was more interested in growing pretty flowers.  So I thought we would recycle some more tin cans like we did for our wind chime  and turn them in to planters this time.

It is actually pretty easy to do this, we painted ours to make them pretty (and well my daughter LOVES painting!) but you don't have to.  And I got the seeds from the dollar store so for 6 flowers it only cost us one dollar... gotta love that!

I really think this is one of the funnest craft ideas we have done.  My daughter has come out every day to water her plants and at the beginning she would check for growth each day (well some days 3 or 4 times a day).  This weekend we actually planted them outside in the flower garden.  I think they were getting a little big for our kitchen window and I know my daughter and I can't wait till the flowers actually bloom!

This is also a great craft to help teach your kids about recycling or re-purposing items you already have around the house, and to also teach them responsibility since they will need to water there plants daily.

Supplies

Tin Cans
Paint (optional)
Hammer and Nail
Dirt
Seeds or bulbs

Directions
Start by painting all your cans, if you don't want to do this then just skip this step.
Once the paint is dry use your hammer and nail to make about 4 or 5 holes in the bottom of the cans to allow for drainage.
Fill your cans 1/2 full with dirt (we used potting soil I had left over from last year)
Place your seeds or bulbs in the cans, then fill with dirt.
Water your plants, Make sure you do this at least every couple days.
Watch for your plants to start growing.
These are the bulbs we planted
