Wooden Race Car

My son is always taking apart his toy cars and trucks and trying to figure out how to put them back together. So today when we were at the craft store I decided to buy him a Melissa & Doug Decorate-Your-Own Wooden Race Car.

He couldn't wait to put it together when we got home.

The package contained:

• Wooden car
• 4 wooden wheels
• 2 wooden poles to hold the wheels to the car
• Glue
• Paint (red, blue, yellow, black)
• Paint brush
• Sheet of stickers to decorate the car

We started by putting the axle stickers on the wheels. Then we glued the wheels onto the car.

Next we painted the car.

The hardest part was diverting E-man's attention while the car dried. He couldn't wait to take it for a spin. I got him to sit down for 10 minutes to work on a puzzle and watch his favorite TV show, but even these activities that he usually loves were not enough to distract him.

We settled for a semi-dry car and decorated it with stickers. The good thing is that the stickers stuck even though the paint was not completely dry. And the paint washed right off our hands.

My only issue was that the paint brush is really small, so it took forever to paint. I think I will buy a bigger one to keep around for projects like this. Then again, his occupational therapist always says working with small tools like this is great for developing his fine motor skills.

Here is the finished car. He is so proud of it, shows it to everyone saying, "Look, I made a car!" and even took it to bed with him.
