I was told that starting seeds in the house is one of the best ways to go about this whole garden thing so that is what we are doing. Not to mention it is a great way to get my daughter involved it the whole process. She now wants her own garden which we are working on but that post will come later. I did how ever let her decide what we would plant and she choose peas and carrots her two favorite veggies, I should have known.
In order to save time and money I did some research online and found that we can use toilet paper rolls to start our seeds. This is great, I love re-purposing things (much better than them going to the land fill) and this saves us money from having to buy little pots a win-win if you ask me.
We did have to buy dirt, seeds, and I got the containers to plant them in at the dollar store (there are many different sizes and shapes you can get there for only $1.00)
So here is what we did
Supplies
Toilet paper rolls
Plastic containers
Seeds
Dirt
Scissors
Directions
Start by cutting your rolls, I made three planters out of each roll
Fill your containers with dirt, then push your rolls down into the dirt.
Place a seed in each roll, then fill with more dirt
Water your seeds, we also set our outside every day to get some sun.
Don't forget to keep watering your seeds and once they start to grow you can plant them in your garden.
This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing it with our spring carnival. :)
ReplyDeletehi very nice blog and very nice information and so cool. When life gives you empty toilet paper rolls, make a monkey puppet out of the cardboard roll and play with the kids.
ReplyDeleteGreat way to plant seeds with the kiddos, and I love how you used recyclables. :) Thanks for sharing at Stress-Free Sunday!
