GAK Recipe

I thought the girls would really get a kick out of making some GAK and it would help to pass the time of another snow day since they could play with it for as long as they wanted.  However I underestimated how much of a girly girl my little one is (not that it is a bad thing).  You see my oldest daughter is very much a tom boy, she loves bugs mud and slime.  My little one however does not like to get her hands dirty.  So I did not think this one through very well.  She had fun making this but as you will see in the pictures below once the GAK was made she started pulling her hands away.  I tried to get her to just touch it and then she ran to daddy so he could save her from the evil slime.  Oh well my oldest LOVED it!

Trust me when I tell you the cleanup on this one if VERY easy.  I know when you scroll down and see the pictures you will get a little worried about the clean up, but this stuff will just fold over on it's self and collect any pieces on the table.  And what ever GAK is left on the table (or your child) it will just rinse right off with water.  I was pretty worried when my oldest put it on her hair (I have no clue why she did that) but it just came right out in the bath (thank goodness).  It even came right off her clothes so no worries about ruining an outfit or anything.

I know this is a Science experiment but it is also a fun toy too.  So my advice is take the time to explain about how the substance is changing into a polymer, maybe talk a little about chemical reactions. And if you want only add a small amount of the Borax solution at first and see how the more you add the stringier the slime gets. Then just have fun with it.  I even had a hard time resisting the urge to dig my hands in the goop.

What is happening with this experiment? When the Borax mixture is added to the glue mixture it produces a putty like substance called a polymer.  Which in basic terms is a long strain of molecules.  Depending on how much of the Borax mixture you add will depend on how stringy your GAK will be.

Supplies
8oz Glue
8oz Water
1/2 Cup Warm Water
1 tsp Borax
Food Color

Directions
Empty your glue into a bowl (we used 2 4oz bottles)
Fill your glue bottles with water and shake (make sure you put the lid on first)
Pour the water/glue into the bowl
In a separate cup add 1/2 cup warm water then 1tsp borax and stir
Feel free to add some color to your glue mixture (we did 2 drops red 2 drops blue)
Stir your glue mixture then add your borax water (NOTE: The more borax mixture you add the more stringy it will be.  If you want it more firm add less)
Pretty quick your mixture will start to change into a Polymer.
Explore the feel of it, it is not slimy at all
(my little on is not so sure about this, she is pulling her hands away)
 Have fun
(notice the open door behind my daughter, this is when my little one too off for daddy)
And don't worry it actually cleans up real easy, with just water. Even came right out of her hair.
Go head parents get in on the fun!
Store in an air tight container or a ziplog baggie.

Homemade Dog Treats

My oldest has been wanting to make some special dog treats for awhile now.  The counselor at her school has a dog named Maddy that comes to the school everyday.  She helps the kids feel comfortable because it is easier for the kids to talk while petting the dog, well everything is better while petting a dog right?

Well my daughter is a HUGE animal lover and she talks about Maddy all the time and wanted to make her a special treat.  I finally got around to asking if it was okay for her to bring Maddy a treat and they said it was.  So since we were snowed in again (yes I know it is Spring, however Kansas does not know this yet) I thought it was the perfect day to make some dog treats for Maddy.

I got this recipe from Marci at Stone Cottage Adventures, she has a few different doggie treat recipes but this one is her Dog Biscuits with Oats recipe.  And I have to say our taste tester (Prada our doggie) really LOVED these cookies.  She could not eat them fast enough, so I am pretty certain that Maddy will enjoy them too.

The girls really had fun making the dog treats too, I think the best part was when my oldest got to mix the dough with her hands.  That was pretty fun, my little one does not like to get her hands dirty so she passed on that part.  Both girls thought it was cute that we made them in the shape of a dog.  Not that Prada really cared what shape they were in she just wanted another cookie.  I guess we will have to make these again!  Thanks Marci for sharing your recipe with us, and Prada and Maddy thank you too!

Supplies
1 1/2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1 Cup Old Fashioned Oats, dry
1 Cup Peanut Butter
1/2 Cup Powdered Milk
1/2 Cup Broth (Chicken, Beef, or Veggie)
4 Eggs

Directions
Pour your Flour in a bowl
 Add your Oats
 Powdered Milk
Add your Broth
 Then your Peanut Butter
 And finally your Eggs
Stir it up till it is too hard to stir then mix together with your hands!

 Roll the dough out
Then cut out your dog treats with your favorite cookie cutter.
Preheat oven to 350 then bake your homemade dog treats for 20 min.
Now just give them to your doggies!
 I think she likes them
Oh yeah they are good!
Oh look they look just like our Prada!

Fireworks in a Jar Experiment

I saw this experiment on Pintrest the other day and knew we had to give it a try.  So this past weekend I got all the supplies together while the girls were down in the basement playing and then yelled down "Do you girls want to do some Science?"  My oldest screamed YEAH and they both came running up the stairs and sat in their chairs at the table.  I just love how excited they are getting over Science.  I hope that they will stay this excited about it in the years to come!

This experiment is cool because you get to watch as the colors shoot down and mix in the water.  I will explain what is happening below but it is basically all about oil and water here.  But by adding the food color you get a show.  I can see why they call it fireworks in a jar but when I told my daughter that is what we were doing she started to back up getting ready for the explosion.  So I had to explain that it was not that kind of fireworks and we were just going to watch the colors shoot in the jar.  I think she was a little disappointed that there would be no loud bang.

What is happening with this experiment?
This one goes back to the basics of Oil and Water.  The fact is Oil and Water don't mix and will actually push away from each other.  So when you add the oil & color mixture to the water the food color (which is water base) will push away from the oil and a very pretty display of color.  The colors will mix in the water which makes this a great color mixing activity too (which is why we only used primary colors).  You can try this several times mixing just red & yellow or yellow & blue and even red and & blue to see what colors they make.

Supplies
Big jar of water (or a vase)
2 Tablespoons Oil
3 drops each of red, blue, & yellow food color
Spoon
Measuring Cup

Directions
Fill your jar or vase with water
Add your 2 tablespoons of oil to a cup (any cup that is easy to pour)
Add 3 drops each of the red, blue, & yellow food color (do not add more your water will just turn black)
Stir the food color and oil so the food color breaks up into smaller droplets
Pour your oil mixture into your water
 Now watch the color show!
As the color separates from the oil it will shoot down into the water making your fireworks.

321 Cake for Kids

Several weeks ago I heard about this 321 cake.  I am not really sure how it stared but I guess it is pretty popular on Weight Watchers since it is only 1 points plus point.  So since I am trying to loose a little weight yet still have a VERY BIG sweet tooth I thought I would give it a try. I was very suprised at how much cake you actually get and how yummy and quick this is.

So the other day when my girls wanted a treat I thought why not make this for them!  It is perfect for the kids since it is a single serving so I don't have to make a whole batch of cupcakes and then eat half of them (okay I eat more than half but who's counting).

Not only is this a quick easy treat for the kids but since you are only mixing water into the cake mix you  are giving them a lower fat/calorie treat than a regular cupcake.  Most cupcakes are made with oil and eggs and this one has none of that.  I wont go so far as to say this is healthy because lets face it this is cake from a box.  But it is a healthier option than a regular cupcake.  The trick is the Angel Food Cake Mix, that cake is so light and fluffy and that is what makes this work.  The 2nd cake mix can be any cake you like.  We used Devils Food, but my sister is using Lemon cake mix.  So you pick what you like best.

We also added whip cream and sprinkles since this was for the kids and those are both totally optional.  If you are looking at Weight Watcher points adding them will increase your points, and they also add more calories to this yummy treat.  My girls however are not watching their weight and the whole point of this was to make them a yummy quick treat where we would not have a ton of extra treats left over for mommy to eat (since I am watching my weight).

Supplies
Box of Angel Food Cake Mix
Box of Devils Food Cake Mix (can use any other cake mix for this one)
2 Table Spoons Water
Whip Cream (optional)
Sprinkles (optional)

Directions
Mix your box of Angel Food Cake Mix & Your box of Devils Food Cake Mix (can sub any other cake mix for the Devils) in a big baggie.
Once the two cake mixes are mixed when ever you are ready for a treat just mix
Three Tablespoons Cake Mix
 Two Table Spoons Water
 Stir it all together
 Microwave for One minute
Add Whip cream and sprinkles (totally optional)
Eat and enjoy your yummy low calorie quick and easy treat!
