GAK Recipe

I thought the girls would really get a kick out of making some GAK and it would help to pass the time of another snow day since they could play with it for as long as they wanted.  However I underestimated how much of a girly girl my little one is (not that it is a bad thing).  You see my oldest daughter is very much a tom boy, she loves bugs mud and slime.  My little one however does not like to get her hands dirty.  So I did not think this one through very well.  She had fun making this but as you will see in the pictures below once the GAK was made she started pulling her hands away.  I tried to get her to just touch it and then she ran to daddy so he could save her from the evil slime.  Oh well my oldest LOVED it!

Trust me when I tell you the cleanup on this one if VERY easy.  I know when you scroll down and see the pictures you will get a little worried about the clean up, but this stuff will just fold over on it's self and collect any pieces on the table.  And what ever GAK is left on the table (or your child) it will just rinse right off with water.  I was pretty worried when my oldest put it on her hair (I have no clue why she did that) but it just came right out in the bath (thank goodness).  It even came right off her clothes so no worries about ruining an outfit or anything.

I know this is a Science experiment but it is also a fun toy too.  So my advice is take the time to explain about how the substance is changing into a polymer, maybe talk a little about chemical reactions. And if you want only add a small amount of the Borax solution at first and see how the more you add the stringier the slime gets. Then just have fun with it.  I even had a hard time resisting the urge to dig my hands in the goop.

What is happening with this experiment? When the Borax mixture is added to the glue mixture it produces a putty like substance called a polymer.  Which in basic terms is a long strain of molecules.  Depending on how much of the Borax mixture you add will depend on how stringy your GAK will be. 

Supplies
8oz Glue
8oz Water
1/2 Cup Warm Water
1 tsp Borax
Food Color

Directions

 Empty your glue into a bowl (we used 2 4oz bottles)

 Fill your glue bottles with water and shake (make sure you put the lid on first)

 Pour the water/glue into the bowl

 In a separate cup add 1/2 cup warm water then 1tsp borax and stir

 Feel free to add some color to your glue mixture (we did 2 drops red 2 drops blue)

 Stir your glue mixture then add your borax water (NOTE: The more borax mixture you add the more stringy it will be.  If you want it more firm add less)

Pretty quick your mixture will start to change into a Polymer.

 Explore the feel of it, it is not slimy at all

 And don't worry it actually cleans up real easy, with just water. Even came right out of her hair.

Store in an air tight container or a ziplog baggie.
