DIY Party Hats

Yesterday my daughter had two friends over (you know to help with the winter break boredom).  I decided that it would be fun to do a quick craft project with the kids (am I the only one who is always thinking of doing crafts?) and that is when I decided to do party hats.  I thought they would be fun for New Years and I had all the supplies on hand so it was the perfect last minute craft for a bunch of kids (okay only 3 but more than my usual amount of kids anyway).

They all were pretty excited about making the hats and then had to have a hat party once they were all done. A hat party apparently consists of drinking juice and eating snacks while wearing awesome party hats.  I have never been invited to a hat party before and thought it was quite a lot of fun, at least the kids at fun at it, I was not invited to this one either.

Since this was a very last minute idea we just kind of made the hats on the fly and had to figure it out as we did them.  Originally we were going to glue the pipe cleaners to the construction paper but none of the kids were patient enough for the glue to dry so we used tape to hold them in place instead.  Feel free to use the glue if you have more patients than a bunch of kids hurrying up to get to a hat party.

What are you all doing to help with the Winter break boredom?

Supplies
Party Hat Template
Construction Paper
Pom Poms
Gems
Pipe Cleaners
String
Hole Punch
Glue Stick
Glue
Tape

Directions
Start by printing your pattern and cutting it out.  Then trace it onto the construction paper and cut it out.
Have the kids decorate the hats using the pom poms and gems.
Tape the pipe cleaners on the inside coming out the top of the hat.
Fold the paper over and glue to make the hat.
Glue pom poms to your pipe cleaners if desired.
Punch a hole on each side of the hat and then tie your string on to help the hats stay on the kids heads (I tied one end then put the hat on the kids to measure how long the string needed to be).
Now the kids are ready for a party with their cool fun hats!

Easy Children's Art Display

If your kids are like mine you find yourself with a LOT of art work and have no clue what to do with it all.  We do a lot of crafting at our house (I bet you did not guess that), but in addition to that both my girls bring me TONS of stuff they make at daycare and at school.  They are always so proud of the things they make but I have no idea what to do with it all.  Until I decided to really turn our playroom into a playroom (it really is the dinning room but now it is a playroom).

I decided to turn one wall into our Art wall.  I got some cheap frames from the dollar store and painted them.  Then I just put some of their art into the frames and hung them.  Pretty cheap and simple.  And really this looks so cute that you don't even need a playroom to do it.  If you just want to do one or two frames on a wall in the kitchen or hall I bet the kids would be so proud every time they walk by and see their work proudly displayed.  It is a great way to show them how proud you are of their work.

Supplies
Cheap dollar store frames
White spray paint (could use any color)
Children's Art

Directions
Use your spray paint to paint each frame any color you want.

Once the frames dry put your art into the frames.
Now hang on the walls and see how proud your little artists are!

We Made That Linky #18

Merry Christmas everyone!  We went to my moms for the holiday and had a great time.  Both my girls were so cute seeing all the presents Christmas morning.  I keep trying to remember what we did on Christmas before we had kids, because it sure does seem like it would not be much fun without the little stinkers.  I sure hope you all had a wonderful holiday and got everything you wanted!!

Sorry this post is so late, I brought my computer to my moms with all good intentions of getting some work done.  But alas the computer never came out of its bag.  I spent the whole time relaxing and visiting with family.  Can't say I am sorry about that, but sorry to make you all wait.

Thank you all so much for sharing your crafts, projects, and recipes all geared toward kids last week.  I loved seeing what you all are up to and checking out all of your blogs.  I am now your newest follower. Daddy Daddy, It's Time For Bed - Book Review

My sister actually gave me this book, the author is a friend of hers that she bowls with (yes people still bowl).  I know what you are thinking, you would not expect a bowler to be a children's book writer; well anyone can be a parent and parents usually know what kids like/want.  And the author of  Daddy Daddy, It's Time For Bed! Michael P. Callahan certainly knows what kids like/want.

My very first reaction when I opened the book was that I really liked the Illustrations.  My kids are usually drawn in first by the pictures since they can not read on there own yet.  So the pictures have to be able to tell a story the kids can understand and this book does that.

But even if the pictures are great, the story still has to be something the kids will like, and this story is.  It is about a boy who is ready for bed but sees Monsters in his room.  What kid does not go to bed and see monsters.  I know I did when I was little and both my girls do too (especially when they don't want to go to sleep).  Both my girls actually really like the book and and my oldest made me read it twice the first night.  Then the next night Daddy had to read it twice again.  The little one has only had the chance for us to read it once since my oldest has now stolen the book for herself (we have some sharing issues in our house).
I highly recommend this book Daddy Daddy, It's Time For Bed! , not only is it written & illustrated well but it will help with the issue of Monsters at bed time.   And trust me when I say the kids will LOVE it because my oldest does not usually like to read the same book over and over again (she likes to read a different book each night) but this one is still on her bed waiting to be read again.

Christmas Tree Pancakes

Pancakes are a big hit our house.  And my girls love it when we do fun stuff with them, like when we made our Pinkalicious Pancakes or when we made our Jack O Lantern Pancakes for Halloween.  So I am sure it comes to no suprise that we had to make a special pancake treat for Christmas.

I was actually planning on waiting till this weekend to make these but we got our first snow day today and since the first snow day is special I thought it would be a great time to make these for the girls.  My oldest daughter woke up early so she helped me make them.  I told her we were going to make a big Christmas tree pancake and when I started making round pancakes she got pretty confused but I told her to wait and she would see the tree in the end.

Now for those of you who have tried to make color pancakes and failed because when cooked they are more brown than anything, I found a new trick today to get your pancakes the color you want.  Cook the pancakes till almost done on just one side (make sure your burner is not too high or they will burn).  Then flip the pancakes and let the other side cook for just a minute then remove.  Now the brown part on the 2nd side will peal right off and you will have beautiful color pancakes (see pictures below if you want to see what I am talking about).

Supplies
Pancake Mix (any kind you want)
Green Food Color
M&M's
Almond Hersey Kisses (because the wrappers are gold)

Directions
Make your pancake mix as directed, then add your green food color to the mix.
Cook your pancakes on med to med low heat so they cook almost all the way on one side.
Flip pancakes when almost done and let cook for a few seconds.  Remove the brown from the 2nd side of pancakes to show the green color of pancakes.
Line up your pancakes to look like a Christmas tree, then decorateate with candy.
Watch for the big surprise faces on the kids before they dig in and eat your tree!

We Made That Linky #17

Well I made it home from Miami alright.  And as much as I miss the nice warm weather I sure am glad to be home and back with my babies.  Nine days was far too long to be away.  Now it is one week till Christmas and I need to get in gear and start getting things done, because I still have a ton to do.  Are any of you ready for the Holidays already?

Thank you all so much for sharing your crafts, projects, and recipes all geared toward kids last week.  I loved seeing what you all are up to and checking out all of your blogs.  I am now your newest follower. And my personal favorite, A Versatile Card Pattern, by Toddlers Through Preschool.  Not only is this a great card pattern that would make cards for every occasion, but she shows you how to teach your child while making the card.  Like counting the sides, seeing the different shapes.  Really a great project for young children.

Black Sharpie
Orange Sharpie
Funnel

Directions

Using your funnel pour your snow (or salt) into your Ornament

And my personal favorite, Please Tell Us About Your Country by Mother of Discussion.  I just love this idea!  She shows you how to write letters to embassies in order to get information on different countries; so you can teach your kids about all the different countries in the world.  I can't wait to get some information on several countries we are interested in!  This is such a great way to teach the kids.
