Pumpkin Tie Dye Shirt

Can you believe that I have never tie dyed a shirt before?  It was always something I wanted to do but just never got around to it.  Then I finally decided to give it a shot and was going to do a heart tie dye pattern, when I thought hey it is Halloween why not try to do a pumpkin.  I mean if you can tie dye a heart shape why not a pumpkin right?  And I have to say I really LOVE how it turned out.  And my daughter is super proud of her creation!

I did learn a few things though; the shirt above is actually our 2nd shirt.  Our first one had a LOT more white on it.  You really need to soak the shirt with the dye because it is hard to get it in all the nooks and crannies and the more die you apply the more likely the color will soak through.

Another great tie dye tip we learned is not to worry so much about the die mixture. The die packs say it makes 3 gallons but you do not need to make that much.  Just boil water, pour the water in your squirt bottle then add die till you are happy with the color.

The most important thing to remember when doing Tie Dye is that it is pretty hard to mess it up.  The first shirt we did even though it has a lot more white I still like how it came out and think it is pretty cool.  So don’t worry if your colors bleed between the rubber bands (because they will), no matter what happens to the shirt you will end up with an original piece of art that you and your kids can be proud of.

Supplies
White shirt
Washable Marker
Orange Rit Dye
Black Rit Dye
2 Plastic Squeeze bottles
Rubber Bands
Rubber Gloves
Brown Fabric Paint
Yellow Glow in the Dark Fabric Paint

Directions

The easiest way to mix your dye is to boil water and pour it in to your squeeze bottles.  Add some of your powered dye to the bottle.  I did not measure; I just poured it in till I liked the color.  Let the dye sit in the bottles to dissolve while you get your shirt ready.

Start with a washed slightly damp white shirt.  Fold it in half length wise.

Draw a half pumpkin shape on the crease of the shirt with your washable marker.  (If you cannot free hand it, then you can print out a good picture from doing a Google search for pumpkins, that way you can get the exact shape you want!).
Start pinching the shirt on the line you just drew.  You want to follow the link all the way around and keep the line straight while doing it. (Feel free to move the rest of the shirt around to make it easy for you).
Once done make sure your line is straight then rubber band the shirt starting with that line (this will be your pumpkin when done).

Color your shirt starting with orange then black and keep switching off with each rubber banded section.

Leave your shirt somewhere to dry for about 4 to 24 hours (We did one at 4 hours and one at 7, the colors were much brighter on the one we left for 7 hours).

When you have left your shirt to dry long enough, rinse it off under cold water then remove the rubber bands. (The shirt on the left is our first one, a little too much white)
Let the shirt dry then put your shirt over a board or place a sheet of paper inside so the paint does not go through to the other side then trace your pumpkin face and stem (if you choose too) onto the center orange section using a washable marker or pencil.

Paint in the face and stem using your brown and glow in the dark yellow paint.  Leave lying flat for at least 24 hours to dry.  You should wait another 24 hours before you wash the shirt.
Once washed and dried wear your shirt and impress all your friends with how talented you are for making a Jack O Lantern Tie Dyed Shirt!
And if you choose to use the glow in the dark paint like we did then when you go out at night your Jack O Lantern will really GLOW!

Spider Web Gift Bags

Every year I try and come up with a fun craft we can do for my daughters Halloween party at school.  Last year at her preschool we made cute lollipop ghost.  And even though she is now in kindergarten and a different school, I still wanted to do a different project.   Originally I was thinking of making some pumpkin play dough (it has been going around pintrest and looks like fun) to pass out but well I have just been too busy and needed something a LOT easier.  That is when I came up with these spider web gift bags.

I have to say they came out cuter than I thought they would.   And my daughter had such a great time putting them together.  We bought the cotton candy from the dollar store they came in tubs and we got three gift bags out of each tub.   We also found the spiders at the dollar store too so this project does not cost much.  Really it depends how many kids you have in the class and how many tubs of cotton candy you need, but if you spend $20 on everything I would be shocked.  So not only will you save money making these, but they are super easy to put together it only took my daughter maybe 30min to do 16 bags.  But the best part is I am pretty sure the kids in the class will think these are super cool, I know my daughter did when she saw her finished product!

Supplies
Cotton Candy
Plastic Gift Bags
Plastic Spiders
Ribbon
Spider Web Gift Tags

Directions
Print out your spider web gift tags and have your child write their names on them.
Cut out your gift tags.
Punch a hole in your gift tags so you can attach them to your bags later.
WASH HANDS Then fill your bags with the cotton candy.  (one tub from the dollar store will make 3 bags).
Put a plastic spider in your bag with the cotton candy.
Cut your ribbon in to strips.
Tie your bags with a strip of ribbon.
Now tie one of your gift tags onto the bag with your ribbon.
Your bags are now ready to pass out to your friends.

Pom Pom Candy Corn

Halloween has to be one of my favorite holidays.  My girls get so excited about dressing up and you know CANDY!   And one of our favorite treats around Halloween is candy corn.  I know big surprise right, that stuff is addictive, you can’t just eat one!  So it should come to no surprise that this project is a giant candy corn… YUMMY!  Okay you can’t eat this one, but it sure does look yummy.  This is also a great project for the     kids because it can keep them busy for a while so if you have stuff to get done, well just get everything all set up and let them go to town gluing all the pom poms on.   Oh and if you are worried about the kids using the glue gun there is a trick to it so they don’t get burned.  Simply show them to hold the pom pom by pinching one end then applying the glue to the other end (see first picture below at how my daughter is holding it) and then sticking to the cone.  This way the hot glue does not come close to their little fingers.

SuppliesPom Poms (Orange, Yellow, and White)
Glue Gun
Styrofoam Cone

Directions
Glue your pom poms to the Styrofoam cone using your glue gun.

Start with yellow, then your orange, then the white; until the whole cone is finished.

Jack O Lantern Pancakes

When I was little my mom use to make us pancakes all the time (it was/is my favorite breakfast).  Once in a while she would make letters or shapes on our pancakes.  She would do this by making the design with the mix then pouring more mix over it.  Since the design gets to cook a little longer you will see it’s edges on the pancake and therefore see the design.

Well I was thinking about this the other day and thought, hey why couldn’t I do Jack O Lantern Pancakes?  I could dye some of the mix yellow to make the face and some orange to make the pumpkin.  It could work right?

You know I had to give it a shot, so we tried it for dinner last night (who else loves breakfast for dinner?).  After I picked up my oldest from school I told her what we were going to make and of course she wanted to help.  So she helped me make the pancake mix and then mix the colors.

I will say that I had a harder time than I thought I would making the faces, getting the mix in a triangle just did not happen.  But I still think they came out cute and both the girls loved them so I say they were a HIT!  I think I now know what we will be having for breakfast Halloween Morning!

Just curious how many of you like to have breakfast for dinner?

Ingredients
Prepared Pancake Mix
Yellow & Red Food Color

Directions

Prepare your pancake mix according to the package directions.

Pour your mix into two separate bowls (You will want a lot more for the Orange!)
Using your yellow & red food color make one bowl yellow and the other orange.

Start with your yellow pancake mix and make your face.
Let the yellow sit for just a min, and then pour your orange pancake mix over it.

Now just like a regular pancake flip when ready, and then serve.
